Violet birds! So today, the BN Team has put together 10 of the most beautiful purple birds on earth. In most examples, male birds are the violets and their female version is drab or entirely different colors. They are all gorgeous! Check them out below!
VIOLET SABREWING
The Violet Sabrewing (Campylopterus hemileucurus) is an extremely large hummingbird that resides in streamside understory and forest edges within close proximity to mountain rainforests from southern Mexico and throughout Central America down into Costa Rica, as far West as Panama.
The males are dark green on the back and wing coverts, deep violet as below. They sport black, white tails as well. Females have dark green above and grey below, just a violet throat.
PURPLE GRENADIER
The Purple Grenadier (Uraeginthus ianthinogaster) inhabits subtropical and tropical lowland and dry shrublands throughout eastern Africa. Males are decorated with brilliant violet bellies and eye masks, russet backs and caps. Cinnamon brown mottled females with shy white spots on the belly and maybe a few purple tail feathers.
PURPLE GALLINULE
The Purple Gallinule (Porphyrio martinicus) dons its violet feathers in just the right spots: head, neck & belly; magnificent against glossy turquoise green back, yellow legs, red beak & red eyes.
These magnificent creatures are found naturally occurring in the marshlands of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and Oklahoma as well as South Carolina & Texas south to Central & South America and the Caribbean.
PURPLE HONEYCREEPER
Native to the forest tops and cocoa and citrus plantations of northern South America, the Purple Honeycreeper (Cyanerpes caeruleus) can be found here. Males are mostly bluish violet with black wings, chins, throats and bellies, yellow legs. While females are very different, bearing mostly lime green and yellowish feathers.
VIOLET-CROWNED WOODNYMPH
Violet-crowned Woodnymph (Thalurania colombica): found in wet lowlands and foothills of Central and South America. It is a type of hummingbird.
This common bird has breathtaking violet crowns, upper backs, shoulders and bellies in males with green throats, breasts and lower backs. Males are a mix of blue-green colors
PURPLE STARLING
Range Northeast Africa to South Africa,Also found in scrublands, open woodlands, savannahs and more generally cultivated areas throughout the whole of tropical Africa. The metallic purple heads, crowns and bodies with yellow eyes and black beaks are the same for both sexes.
SPLENDID SUNBIRD
Distribution: The Splendid Sunbird (Cinnyris coccinigaster) lives in wet savannahs and woodlands across tropical West and Central Africa. Males have a glossy purple neck, dark green back, light red breast patch and black wings and tails. Females have greenish-brown topsides and are yellowish below. An interesting characteristic is their thin down-curving bills and brush-tipped tubular tongues.
LILAC-BREASTED ROLLER
The Lilac Breasted Roller (Coracias caudatus) inhabits open woodlands and paperbark swamps in sub-Saharan Africa and in the southern Arabian Peninsula. DifferencesBetweenSexesMale and female are the same commonly, lushly feathered pale violet breast covering underbelly turquoise black tail chestnut wing caps.
GOLDEN-CHEVRONED TANAGER
The golden-chevroned tanager (Thraupis ornata) is a passerine bird endemic to the subtropical and tropical moist lowland and montane forests of Brazil. It features a light lavender body with brilliant golden chevron-shaped shoulder patches.
VIOLET-BACKED STARLING
The Violet-backed Starling (Cinnyricinclus leucogaster) is a species of bird in the Sturnidae family It is the smallest of starlings, endemic to the woodlands and savannahs of Southern African.
