Doug Ford

Doug Ford (born 20 November 1964 in Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada) is a Canadian politician and businessman. He has been the 26th Premier of Ontario since 2018. Ford was a member of the Conservative Party in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, representing the Etobicoke North riding in Toronto. In 2010-2014, he was a Toronto City councillor before entering politics. He is a familiar face in Deco Labels and Tags, which is a family-owned label printing company.

Ford is the 2nd of four children of Doug Bruce Ford and Ruth Diane Ford. He went to Scarlett High School Collegiate Institute and dropped out of Humber College. His first job was with Deco Labels and Tags, which was his father’s business, becoming president later in his career. He introduced the product to the United States, such as Chicago and New Jersey.

Net worth: Doug Ford‘s net worth has been estimated at 50 million dollars, most of which comes from his business ventures, including Deco Labels and Tags.

The rise of Doug Ford

From 2010 to 2014, Doug was a Toronto City Councillor for Ward 2 Etobicoke North, the chief strategist, defender, and advisor to his younger brother, the charismatic and controversial Toronto Mayor Rob Ford. Both constructed Ford Nation, a loyal, dense, suburbanally oriented working class core that is left behind by urban locations.

Ford took over the leadership void in 2018 as a popular outsider. He narrowly beats party insider Christine Elliott, taking control of the PC party. The first time he got more than half the vote was in June 2018 when he beat the Liberals. Under Liberal leader Dalton McGuinty and Kathleen Wynne, Ford swept the Province with his pledge to reduce the gas tax, power rates, and eliminate government waste. He wins a 76- seat majority government by devastating the Liberals’ rule.

He changed roles from a controversial partisan to a pragmatic crisis manager in 2022 during the Covid 19 crisis. He won a bigger majority by 83 seats by embracing the slogan of big infrastructure pledges and actively seeking out private sector trade unions. Ford calls a winter snap election in 2025 to take the opposition parties by surprise. This strategy is very successful, and the PCs win 80 seats, giving them a third consecutive and third overall majority, and making them a major political player.

2026 Landscape

Ford’s ascent to power has been a textbook example of electoral dominance, and his rule is now in for a choppy ride. He has a great deal of resistance from the public in places on the issue of freedom of information reforms, the devastation wrought by the Greenbelt land dispute, and the lofty projects such as the Billy Bishop Island Airport expansion. Given these changing political currents, Ford continues to be the safe choice in Ontario politics.

Career Milestones

Doug Ford started his career at Deco Labels and Tags, established by his father in 1962. He took over the family business and served as president. In his time at the helm, the company grew to the United States, to Chicago, and to New Jersey. His business acumen and leadership skills proved to be the instruments in the company’s growth and success.

He was succeeded by his brother, Rob Ford, in 2010 when he was elected as Toronto’s mayor, and was elected by the people of Ward 2 Etobicoke North as a city councillor in 2010. He was on numerous committees, including the Budget Committee, where he achieved substantial savings for the taxpayers.

His entrepreneurial skills facilitated Deco’s growth and expansion into the various markets across the United States, which make up Deco’s general growth and success.

As the Premier of Ontario

He is also well-known in politics for his role as the Premier of Ontario. Under his leadership, he enacted a series of tax cuts, deregulation, and a plan to cut the deficit. But his politics have tended to defuse the controversy, particularly in the area of health care reform and education reform.
